The Lion and the Mouse by Jerry Pinkney. New York: Little Brown, 2009.
Ages 3-8.

2010 Caldecott Award and Parents Choice Award.

Booktalk: Sometimes even a grrrrreat lion needs help. This lion never thought it would be a mouse that would save his life. Help me tell this story because this book has very few words–actually, the words are only animal voices!

Note:  This Caldecott award-winning book retells the tale of “The Lion and the Mouse,” an Aesop’s fable. The text is wordless, except for animal sounds like “grrrrr.” Instead, the illustrations, rendered in watercolor and colored pages, tell this story grandly. Try using sound effects of African jungles to give the book a special atmosphere. For activities, use the lion and mouse coloring pages or you could make stick puppets from these images.
